It was supposed to be just another weekend of partying in Chihuahua. The familiar rhythm of pre-drinks at a friend's house, plans for bar-hopping, and the carefree laughter of twenty-somethings with their whole lives ahead of them. That night, our group split up. Jose, one of my best friends, decided to head to the bar. In those days before ride-sharing apps, and with taxis scarce in certain areas, he made the fatal decision to drive.
I got home safely and drifted off to sleep, unaware that our world was about to shatter. At 3 AM, my phone rang. It was another close friend, his voice cracking as he delivered the news that would divide my life into "before" and "after". Jose had crashed. He was gone instantly. At just twenty-two, one of my best friends had left this world, leaving behind a void that seemed impossible to fill.
The weeks that followed were dark. Grief consumed me, raising questions about death that no one seemed able to answer. It wasn't until I encountered the ancient wisdom of the Yogis that I began to find peace.
The Yogis teach us that death is not an end, but a transition. Like a wave returning to the ocean. They speak of the soul's journey through the veil. How consciousness gently detaches from the body, floating free. It moves from one plane of existence to the next. There is no fear. Only peace. In this realm, souls reflect, rest, and prepare for their next step, whether that's rebirth or evolution to higher planes of existence. The cycle continues.
Yogi wisdom transformed my grief. The pain of losing Jose lingers, but his presence manifests in new ways. Because our connections transcend physical existence. Love flows eternal, beyond death's threshold. In moments of meditation, peace flows from my heart to Jose's spirit. His essence persists, simply transformed rather than lost.
Now, when memories of that dark night return, and sometimes they do, instead of despair, there’s understanding. Instead of emptiness, there’s meaning. Because Jose's journey did not end on that highway; it continues through realms I cannot yet see, but surely know exist. And when my time comes, be it decades from now or tomorrow's dawn, we shall meet again. As eternal souls who have known each other through a thousand lifetimes. Who have loved through a thousand deaths. Who will recognize each other with the instant clarity of lightning splitting the sky.
